Evelyn’s lips curved, just slightly, a ghost of a smile that had not been allowed for too long. “I’m learning,” she replied softly, but her eyes betrayed everything she could not say — relief, exhaustion, and a fierce pulse of unspoken desire.

Lucas moved closer, brushing a loose strand of hair from her face. “Learning or pretending?” he asked, a playful glint threading through the tension.

“I think… maybe both,” she admitted, her voice catching. She felt his hand curl around hers, thumb stroking the back of her palm, grounding her in a reality that was both safe and scorching with proximity.
