Chapter 89
The jangling of keys startled a sleeping Leo awake. A clanking sound followed. He flipped open his eyes and saw a cop opening the door of the holding cell. He bit off an insect from the curve of his elbow. He was the only one in this holding cell.
“You have a visitor, Mancini,“ the cop said. Leo rose to his feet and walked out of the open cell.
Leo had expected that he would have nightmares about Lionel in the holding cell. But he hadn’t. Instead, what tormented him was his conscience. He wasn’t able to stop thinking about Emma and her family. The thoughts of what her father must have passed through in jail hit him hard. The thought of how much Emma must hate him also troubled his entire being. He wondered if she was still alive. He intended on pleading his slot to help him find Emma. He owed her an apology.
