In the car taking them home, Anna had questions—so many questions—crowding her chest and sitting heavily on her tongue. They pulsed there, begging to be spoken, but she kept her lips sealed. Not with the driver sitting just an arm’s length away, silent but listening. The interior of the car felt smaller than usual, tighter, like the walls were inching inward with every passing second. She sighed quietly and turned her face toward the window, letting the blur of passing streetlights distract her from the storm building inside.
Lucien placed his hand gently on her bare thigh, the skin warm where her slit dress exposed it. Anna turned her head, slowly, and let her eyes drop to his hand. It was his left hand. The one wearing the gold wedding band that still glinted as if it were brand new. Her gaze lingered on the ring for a heartbeat before she turned back to the window, not saying a word.
