Mark doesn’t answer.

Because we already know the truth.

“She knew what she was doing!” he snaps again, but his voice cracks, sharp around the edges. “She came back! She walked through that door, she came home!”

“No,” I say, low and deadly, stepping forward again. “She walked into a trap. One she thought was empty. She didn’t come back for you. She came to get her life back.”

“You’re lying,” he growls, eyes darting wildly. “She’s confused. She’s not thinking clearly, she was there all weekend, soaking up their attention, getting spoiled. Of course she’s gonna say whatever you want to hear.”

“You think she’s saying that to appease us?” Mason scoffs. “You think she’s screaming like that because she’s afraid?”
