He is mumbling a few words, but when I talk to him, it stops. As soon as I tell him we are safe, my attention is on his breaths and the beat of his heart. He is sound asleep, and that makes me feel better.

I hear a noise all of a sudden that sounds like nails on a chalkboard. It is too hard for me to look up because Lexcis has a tight grip on me, so I give up.

But the sound of scraping keeps going.

"It is Lexcis," I whisper.

He is not moving or making any noise. He does not move at all.

"Lexcis, can you maybe—"

There is no more scraping sound. But now the deck door is open. I do not see anyone coming, but that does not stop me from reaching for the knife under the pillow.

In my mind, I hold on to Lexcis a little tighter.

After that, I feel it. I can even hear it.
