It was thick enough to conceal both of us, assuming we didn't breathe too loudly. I pulled Chantel against me, her back to my chest as I covered her mouth with my hand to silence her. "Stay quiet, darling," I whispered.
She nodded, her chest rising and falling heavily as the guard passed by in the hallway. With my other hand on my sword, I prepared to defend us if necessary.
"Who's there? Come out now!" he shouted, shining his spotlight randomly around. He nearly discovered Caen but withdrew at the last moment.
"Come on, I know you're out there! Come on, you filthy peasants!"
He approached the spot where I suspected Aldric was hiding. However, he suddenly turned around, heading toward our hiding place.
I pulled Chantel even closer as she shifted away from me, ready to confront him. We didn't want to resort to violence, and I knew she felt the same.
