I notice her staring at me a bit longer than necessary, but I choose to focus on the task at hand.

She's working on the different kinds of salads while I'm working on the rice. It should be easy but I burned the first batch.

"I'm going over to the dessert, yeah?" Chantel announces, breaking the silence.

"What is it?" I ask, my voice filled with curiosity.

"Baked pears with some cinnamon and different kinds of nuts."

My mouth waters at the thought and she chuckles softly.

"I'm sorry," I eventually spit out, unable to hold it in any longer.

Chantel glances up at me, her eyes meeting mine. She motions for me to continue with the other sauce while talking.

"Oh yeah, wait." I stir the sauce and then look back up at her.
