Chapter 52. Safe Choice

As she reflects on what happened, a touch of fear creeps back into her expression.
I tilt my head, studying her a bit more. "Hi…"
She doesn't respond verbally, but her eyes show that she's fully awake now, focusing on my face. Slowly, she pulls her arm away from me and shifts back.
The blanket is still wrapped around her, and I'm not going to take it off until she says something.
"You said that we were late."
"Yeah, we are."
"We should go then," she says, her tone carrying a hint of uncertainty that makes it sound more like a question. Her brows are furrowed, and she nods slightly, emphasizing the uncertain tone.
"We should," I agree, adding a touch of reassurance to my response.
I hold her chin with my hand instead of trying to stand up. As I pull her closer, I run my thumb over the bottom of her lip.
