“We’ll start in a few minutes, Your Majesty.” One of the other speakers lied, waiting for the silence that still hadn’t arrived.
The noise was growing. A noise that spread like a wave, a violent tide. People weren’t reacting the way I thought they would. I felt overwhelmed, anxious. My neck itched, and I scratched it vigorously. I tried to think, but my thoughts were drowned out by the heavy, dense noise.
Soldiers were shouting orders for everyone to be quiet, but no one seemed to listen.
“What’s going on?” I asked, annoyed. “Haven’t they announced that I’ve ended the damn plague?”
“Yes, Your Majesty. That’s what we’ve announced.” The soldier looked down. No one dared to look me in the eye at this lack of aptitude.
“You don’t seem to have communicated the message well.” My voice turned severe. I hadn’t used that tone in a long time.
