Chapter 4. See You Again
Wolfgang smiled and looked down at her hand on his arm. Emily also noticed, and her face turned red. She quickly let go of his hand and stammered: "I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to... I'm sorry!"
"It's okay." Wolfgang shook his head, not knowing what to say next. He had no experience communicating with women.
Emily was also embarrassed and didn't know what to say. As the awkward atmosphere began to change, Dani called Emily's phone. Emily answered the call, and Dani said she had arrived at the Cen-T downstairs, asking where Emily was. After hanging up the phone, Emily looked at Wolfgang and said: "Dani has arrived, so I... I'm going to see a movie now."
"Okay, have fun." Wolfgang said: "It's not too late yet, be safe on your way back after the movie."
"Yes!" Emily nodded vigorously, waving goodbye to him. Although she knew that girls should be more reserved, she couldn't help but say: "So... Let's go see a movie together next time! And... See you agian..."
"Okay. See you again." Wolfgang waved goodbye to her, looked up at the moon in the sky, then turned and walked into the crowd.
Emily also looked up at the sky, admiring the bright full moon. She thought to herself: "This must be a good sign!"
Suddenly, someone lightly tapped her on the shoulder. It was Dani, curious about what she was looking at.
"I'm looking at the moon! Don't you think it looks so round tonight?" Emily replied.
Dani rolled her eyes: "Tomorrow is the 15th day of the lunar month. Of course, it's full. It happens every month. Why are you so surprised? Anyway, let's hurry up and watch the movie. Stop staring at the moon!"
The two bought movie tickets, and while waiting to be seated, Emily couldn't contain her excitement and began to recount the romantic moments of her night to Dani.
Dani listened attentively but frowned: "Stop it! I know he's handsome, but you've been exaggerating everything! What I want to know is what Wolfgang does for a living, his age, and what his family situation is like. Do you know any of that?"
Emily struggled to remember: "Well, my mom told me he has some farm in another country, and as for his job and age... I... I forgot to ask."
Dani shook her head in disbelief: "You are so naive! Just because he's good-looking, you don't care about anything else? You should've asked more about his background!"
Emily pouted: "But he's so handsome, and I can't think of anything else. Maybe fate brought him to me because I had suffered so much before. And on the way here, he even saved a dog. He's really..."
Dani interrupted her: "Wake up, you hopeless romantic! You've only met him once. Why do I feel like you're already planning to marry him?"
But Emily couldn't help herself. During the horror movie, while everyone else was screaming or trembling in fear, Emily just held her popcorn and laughed at the scary scenes. It turned out that after meeting the man she liked, even encountering a horror movie and a female demon on the screen didn't scare her anymore!
But she couldn't be happy anymore because, until the movie's end, Wolfgang hadn't sent her a message. If he had feelings for her, shouldn't he have texted her? But two hours had passed, and it was almost midnight, yet there was still no message. Emily was temporarily anxious and thought, could it be that Wolfgang wasn't interested in her?
Dani looked at her sudden appearance and couldn't help but say: "If he doesn't send you a message... then you send text him, say you finished watching the movie, and see how he responds."
Emily felt it made sense, so she sent a message, but after a long time, she still didn't receive a reply, and she couldn't help but worry: "Why isn't he replying to me? Did something happen on the way back?"
Dani didn't know what to do: "He's a mature man. Could anything have happened?"
Emily still wasn't at ease and wanted to call Wolfgang, but she worried that it was too late and would disturb him while he was resting, so she stood there confused for a while before finally deciding to dial his number.
After a few rings, Wolfgang's voice came through on the other end--
***
Late at night, as the bell struck, there were still about ten minutes left until twelve o'clock.
Wolfgang didn't turn on the light, sitting alone in the dark, empty villa, with eyes as dark as ink, peering through the low window up at the round moon.
His body began to feel a slight pain, and as the time ticked closer to midnight, the pain became more intense, as if his joints were being stabbed by a cold knife, causing even his blood to stop flowing.
He lowered his head to look at the medicine bottle in his hand, and it seemed like his vision was starting to blur. He was hesitating about whether to take medicine to avoid this suffering when suddenly, his cell phone rang.
Wolfgang looked at the name on the screen and closed his eyes, impatiently pressing the button to answer: "What's the matter?"
A gentle male voice came through on the other end: "Could there be anything else? It's almost time. Hearing your agitated voice, I'm afraid you don't intend to take your medicine, do you?"
"There's nothing else, I had better hang up."
"Wait a minute." The person said: "I want to tell you, just like this. We should stay true to physical nature and run free in the mountains and forests! Why do you insist on joining the human society and think they will accept you? Huh, don't dream!"
"I'll do what I want. You don't need to supervise me." Wolfgang gritted his teeth in pain and said: "I won't take medicine, nor will I become like you."
After speaking, he hung up the phone and threw the medicine bottle forcefully outside. The bottle rolled into the corner, and the sound hadn't yet subsided when his mobile phone rang again.
Angrily, Wolfgang shouted into the phone: "What do you want? Can't you see that I'm busy?"
There was silence on the other end before a trembling female voice came through: "I... it's me, Emily. We... were supposed to meet tonight. I'm sorry, it's late. Did I disturb you?"
Wolfgang was about to reply when his body began to change, the bones in his body cracked, and at average speed, the transformation was visible. He gnashed out in pain and realized it was almost midnight. If he didn't hang up the phone, she would hear his voice change!
He could only answer briefly and hoarsely: "I'm busy now! Can you not call me anymore? It's very inconvenient!"
After hanging up the phone, Wolfgang suddenly fell to the ground, his body completely drained of energy, and he could only stare as a layer of thick fur grew on his arms.
A layer of fur that belongs to a wolf.
