In a blink, Sofia had crossed the distance separating her from Jose in a ferocious blur of fangs and slashing talons. She moved with the unstoppable force of an avenging angel, undeterred as her mother's claws raked deep furrows across the demon wolf's face and throat. Jose's taunt transformed into an anguished howl that clawed at Mateo's eardrums like savage talons.

"That's enough out of you, hellspawn," Sofia snarled, her words thick with unvented rage. "You've drawn your last rasping breath."
