”Hmm… everything is all set,” Nelly says, pacing back and forth, her voice tight with barely contained excitement.

”Lynn… you’re still here? Go outside to distract him. He’s already in the driveway.”

”Me? Why me?” I shoot back, crossing my arms. “You’re his girlfriend. You should distract him.”

”Go, Lynn. I need to do some things quickly.”

I hesitate, biting my lip. “But… isn’t he gonna suspect something?”

”Girl, don’t piss me off. Just go.” She practically pushes me toward the door, her hands firm on my shoulders.

I exhale sharply, feeling frustration bubble up as I step outside. Behind me, I hear her hiss to the others, “Guys, turn off the lights. Act normal. Who’s got the confetti?” There is panic in her voice, that edge she gets when things aren’t going exactly her way.

I stand on the doorstep, arms hugged around myself, waiting for her so-called boyfriend. I actually feel sorry for him. She’s just using him to pass the
