Chapter 1. Panic

The sound of gunshots could be heard from some miles away, sending cold shock waves down the spines of everyone who had heard it.

The power supply had gone out in the whole neighborhood, causing their panic levels to rise.

Young Queen Riley hid behind the cupboard in the kitchen as she could see her mum packing some of her stuff into a bag.

“Mum!” she yelled as soon as she heard the sound of another gunshot, this time a little closer than the previous ones.

“Baby, don’t be scared!” Mrs. Olivia Riley, Queen’s mum, replied as she trembled in the darkness while clutching tightly to the bag she held.

Queen Riley, a beautiful girl of 16, had returned home that day later than usual.

Hunching her shoulders and wrapping her arms around herself, she slowly walked into her house, getting ready to be questioned by her parents for coming home late.

To her biggest surprise, no one was home, so she heaved a sigh of relief.

It was 8 pm on the clock, and her parents weren’t back yet.

She attempted calling them. It was just a waste of her time. Their phones were down and not going through.

Queen’s heart pounded quickly. The air around her began to feel stuffy after attempting to call her parents and failing.

She was still panicking when suddenly she heard the sound of someone coming into the compound.

“Oh, thank goodness!” she heaved a sigh of relief as she peeped through the window and confirmed it was her mum.

There was something that made her feel skeptical. Her mum was alone while her dad wasn’t with her.

While still peeping through the window, she heard the front door burst open.

“Mum!” she yelled as she saw her mother.

Olivia was in bad shape. Queen could not even stare at her.

“What happened, mum?” she asked as she hurried to meet her.

There were blood stains on her dress. She looked like she was injured, but luckily she wasn’t.

She was panting with her heart pounding so fast one could hear it from a thousand miles away.

“Go into your room and pack anything important. Remember I emphasized the word important, okay?” she bellowed.

Queen was not okay with whatever her mum was saying and was about to repeat her previous question when the first sound of a gunshot slashed across the quiet air, shutting her up immediately.

“Quickly, do as I said!” Olivia gasped as she shoved her toward the room.

Queen had her heart racing quickly and drops of sweat appearing on her face and forehead. She wobbled as she walked.

Getting into her room, she glanced at everything because they all seemed very important.

“My new laptop, my guitar, my Michael Jordan signed jersey. Everything here is important!” she moaned as she stood still, pondering on what to take.

Suddenly, her windows shattered to the floor. The power supply had also gone out.

“Ahh!” she cried as she ran to the kitchen where her mum was and hid behind the cupboard.

“Cover your ears, baby. Cover them with both hands,” Olivia yelled to her daughter.

“Okay, mummy!” she replied as she trembled. Her clothes were already soaked with sweat as the place became uncomfortable, all because of the darkness.

Olivia stood up, leaned backward, and let out a loud howl. She then waited for some seconds with her ears wide open for a reply. In a few seconds, she heard a loud howl coming from the direction the gunshots were coming from.

“Baby,” she called out to her daughter, her face brightening with a smile. “Walk towards me, and do not be scared,” she urged her. Stretching her hands towards her, she gestured to her to come.

Queen was shaking, and her heart raced faster, but upon seeing her mum’s shining white teeth through the darkness, she could guess that she was smiling. This made her feel safe enough to approach her mum.

“I am so scared,” she moaned as she clutched her mother tightly.

“Sorry, baby, it would soon be over,” she eased her. “We are going through the back, and you do not have to be scared. Okay?”

“Okay,” replied Queen, sweating profusely.

Together, they walked towards the back door and exited the house.

“What is in the bag?” Queen asked her mum.

“Just some important stuff we are going to need,” replied Olivia.

They got out to the backyard and walked towards the woods, which was just a stone’s throw away.

The sound of screaming, shouting, and loud gunshots was still in the air, making Queen tremble on their way to the woods.

“What of Daddy?” Queen asked her mum.

“Daddy is close by. We would wait for him here,” Olivia calmed her daughter as they hid behind a tall and broad tree in the woods.

Queen was breathing rapidly and had her hands placed on her knees. She could no longer keep standing like her mum and decided to sit.

It was 11:00 pm already, and the noise of the gunshots, loud bangs, and people screaming was yet to cease.

Queen was almost dozing off when she heard a loud howl close to them.

“Is that Daddy?” Queen questioned as every ounce of sleep in her body had disappeared.

“Yes! That is your daddy!” replied Olivia with a lit-up face. She stood up and howled back so her husband could locate her and her daughter.

“Honey! Baby!” Jacob Riley called out to his wife and his daughter. He was panting and was coming towards the woods.

“Honey! You are okay!” Olivia cried out as she came out of the woods with Queen.

“Daddy!” Queen yelled out upon seeing her father.

“Why are you still here? I told you to take Queen and go away to the rest.” Jacob screeched as he stopped and stood some distance away from them. His hands were on his knees while his head lowered. He was not visible enough for them, even with the bright Moon.

“You know I would never leave you!” Olivia replied with tears in her eyes.

While they were speaking, there was a loud bang, but this time, it was nearby than the rest. It even made them go deaf for a moment.

Jacob Riley had just fallen to the ground. A bullet had just gone through his back.

“Daddy!” Queen screamed with tears streaming down her eyes as she watched her dad fall to the floor.

“Run! Queen, Run!” he said as he grinned and struggled to stand up.

They both stood at the entrance to the woods, shocked at what had just occurred.

“He is alright,” Olivia said with tears streaming down her eyes as she held Queen in her wrist and ran into the woods.

“No, stop! He does not look alright to me!” she cried as she kept looking back while they ran.
