“Mason, what in the hell are you doing? Where are we going? What's wrong?” I quickly bombarded him with questions, not giving him a chance to answer the first before moving onto the next.

“Freya, shhh please, my mom's watching us. Just act like everything's normal,” he answered through a gritted smile while he waved at Sadie through the kitchen window.

I smiled at Sadie and she returned the smile. The suspicious look she had on her face didn't dissipate and she continued to watch us like a hawk as she finished making the coffees. Mason leaned into me and pulled me in for a hug. While in our embrace he began to whisper into my ear,

“There's a serious problem back home.”

I could hear the panic in his voice even with him trying to hide it from me. I pulled away from our hug and stared into his worried eyes.

“Well, what are we waiting for? When are we leaving?”

He tried to soften the look on his face, but he was failing miserably.
