Celeste’s POV
“Unforgivable,” I growled through clenched teeth. Lyss had just threatened the Goddess’s life—our guardian, our mother in every sense that mattered—and in that moment, a surge of power awakened inside Nyra and me. Driven by devotion and fierce protectiveness, we channeled all our strength into a synchronized double uppercut that rocketed Lyss skyward.
The Goddess had done nothing but care for us. She’d sheltered us, given us food when we were hungry, and offered us safety when we had nowhere else to go. So when this stranger dared speak of ending her life, Nyra and I simply could not stand by.
With hope flickering in my chest, I imagined our strike might knock Lyss unconscious—but reality shattered that hope. Seconds later, Lyss was back on her feet, clutching her midsection in pain. She bent forward once, twice—and then she vomited. Over and over, her body convulsed, ejecting a strange, dark liquid that pooled and spread at her feet.
