When she reached the door of the room, her hatred for Luc was greater than her desire to annoy him. The people there were dressed like Americans, including Luc. Not only were they wearing the clothes of their country, they were Americans. She recognized Venice among them, and she was the first to notice her presence. She looked interestedly at Giovanna's outfit and raised her glass in a toast. Giovanna might have been wearing something that made her feel more at ease, and she noticed that Luc was smiling sarcastically when their eyes met. He had turned her into a joke.
