In murder cases, the concept of diminished responsibility may be used to substitute a verdict of manslaughter. According to criminal law, diminished responsibility is a potential defense excuse which defendants may argue that although they broke the law, they should not be held fully criminally liable for doing so, as their mental functions were "diminished" or impaired. The Vero's lawyer explained this to the parents and was trying to do the same to his client, but the matter now was Desmund Vero refusing to cooperate.
Chloe and Franco Vero had to think of an idea on how to persuade Desmund to participate and avoid escalating the issue into a bigger scandal.
