As soon as I put my arms around the stranger’s neck, I felt a strong bond. “Tell me how you and I know each other. I can tell you’re not telling me something important about us that we should know.”

The man looked at me with narrowed eyes as he thought about what to say.

“We were meant to be family, but your father stopped that from happening. Since I found out the truth, all I’ve wanted to do is kill you to get back at him for what he did to me.”

He stopped for a moment and looked at my face. I looked at him with wide eyes. I wasn’t scared, though. I was just surprised by how blunt he was. “Tell me, my Queen: Do you think your life is more important than other people’s? Should some die so you could live?” The man ran his fingers across my cheek and tucked a stray hair behind my ear, making me shiver.
