The city was just beginning its night shift. The sky had only just turned dark and Carlos watched the light get brighter the darkening backdrop of night from his car window.

The bar was a small but classy type. It had better lighting than most of the others that he frequented and he found Amanda easily enough. He was used to walking into places and looking out for her figure by now since he had done it so many times. She smiled when she saw him but her eyes had a contemplative look to them, she seemed almost distracted. Carlos couldn’t help but look around him as he settled into the seat opposite her. She did not stand up to give him a hug as she usually did.

“Were you followed?” she asked him after he turned around and noted that no one was acting suspiciously in the room.

“No,” Carlos replied. “Why? Do you think someone might have followed me here?”

“No, not at all,” she assured him. “I was just wondering why you were looking around you so much.”
