Chapter 67
Clair walked into the mansion, not yet aware of the mess that had unfolded in her absence. The staff—maids, the butler—stood in complete silence. Something about the air felt off. Unsettled.
"What happened?" she asked, frowning. When she’d left that morning, the house was anything but quiet.
A maid brushed past her in a hurry, paused just long enough to greet her, then blurted out, "The lady fell sick all of a sudden. Ray took her to the hospital."
"Is it serious?" Clair grabbed the maid’s arm, maybe a little too tightly.
"I don’t know, miss. We haven’t heard anything back yet."
Clair gasped. Her eyes widened half worry, half frustration. Without another word, she spun around toward the car she had just stepped out of. A servant was about to park it.
"Wait! Give me the keys," she snapped, already pulling the door open.
