There was only one person bold enough. Only one person stupid enough. Only one person who had been close enough to touch him, to be near his body, to get this close without raising his guard.

The thought didn’t come with shock. It came with something worse… disappointment. A deep, bitter kind that sat heavy in his chest. His grip tightened until his knuckles turned white, the chip biting into his skin as if it dared him to crush it.
So she was the reason?
The reason why shipments vanished. Why things keep going wrong. Why his enemies always seemed one step ahead. Why she had been in places she shouldn’t have been, asking questions she shouldn’t have asked, watching more than she spoke.
He let out a slow, humorless laugh that echoed in the bathroom. It sounded empty, even to his own ears.
All that softness, all that worry and all that care he’d shown meant nothing to her. She had her plans all along. She belonged to someone else.
