Chapter 10
A cloud of witnesses to the truth echoed the waking cry of my conscience, and I withdrew from my soul sad and ashamed. The shadow that was devouring the heart of the moon appeared to pause in its measured movements, s if the entire sky had looked upon us through the majestic stars.
I said:
"Martin Fraser, your words force me to be honest; I am the most dishonorable woman have ever met. I have come here with the single, certain intention of wooing you. If you had gone out to our circle earlier, you would have heard much about me, such as dating and that I am a heartless coquette. However, I will not dare to bring falsehood to your home and the bitterness of death to your heart. Wait until I write to you; don't talk to me right now."
He tried to grab me, but I sprung free and dashed down the street. The eclipse was complete, and I felt lost from Heaven and condemned to an eternity of torment. I stood trembling and sobbing under the restless poplars.
