Chapter 65. He Took It For Me
Lila’s POV
I didn’t run back to the cabin like Ryder said, I was just too scared to. I watched as Ryder shifted again and he was in the trees, moving at such an incredible speed. In minutes he was in the woods, his eyes up and he was trying to figure out something but nothing. Surprisingly quiet. Ryder shifted back.
Everything went quiet.
Too quiet. It was the kind of quiet that leaves you scared, confused and breathless.
Ryder didn’t find anything in the trees but something was wrong. I felt it in my gut before I had a reason to. The air just felt tight. Wrong.
Ryder felt it, too. I knew he did.
He stopped walking, and his hand, it just clenched around mine.
“Get behind me,” he said. His voice was low.
“What is it?”
“I don’t know.”
But he did. Or his instincts did. His eyes were scanning everything, all the dark spots between the trees. I saw the muscles in his back just bunch up under his shirt.
