After a long afternoon of talking Joli into one of my most ornate dresses, then hiding from Kaloni around the palace with Joli in a ballgown, I sit on my bed, tuning my lute. My pillow sings to me. I’m completely exhausted, but I know I won’t sleep.

There’s too much in my head. Amval, the carriage crash, the Som siblings and their losses.

As I pluck out the notes of the song I composed the day after the Haze, Amval’s song, a tiny voice in the back of my mind asks me why I’m still here. I know the truth about my mate—and I hate him for it. Someone seems to be trying to destroy the Soms, and maybe I can figure out who, but then what? Amval reveals himself, the whole kingdom is furious with him for lying, and whoever is trying to take over gets to do so anyway? Joli deserves better, as do Kaloni, Cirocco, and the rest of his siblings, but am I really helping?

Or am I just setting myself up for Amval to lie to me again?
