“Are you really leaving?” Queen Gloria asked.

Lady Valentina was walking me down the hallway toward the elevator when the voice stopped us. I turned sharply. I hadn’t expected to run into her, not here, not now. Frostpine had a way of cornering you when you thought you were finally breathing. “Yes,” I said, meeting her gaze.

She waved a hand lightly. “Give us a minute.”

Lady Valentina hesitated, then nodded and walked away, her steps slow but obedient.

The Queen studied me the way she always did…like she was peeling back layers. “You don’t need to run,” she said coolly. “Alvery women don’t run from danger or challenges. We face them head-on.”
