It took a while before I recovered from the statement that genuinely came out wrong. In fact, I regretted it as soon as I said it. The smile Loren had on her face was like she’d won a jackpot.
At least I was able to use Diego as an excuse not to be her Uber this night. I know a woman is the most vulnerable when drunk; that’s why I called the most trustworthy Uber driver I know. There is no way she’s going to be my liability after all she’s put me through tonight.
After leaving Lugo’s with a full stomach and a half-full heart, I head toward the parking lot where Diego said he’d be waiting. As expected, he’s leaning against my car like he owns it, chewing on a toothpick with that annoying smirk he always wears when he knows he’s got something to say.
“Took you long enough, lover boy,” he says the moment I get within hearing range.
