Chapter 24
“We’ve talked about this. You guys aren’t leaving until we’re sure it’s safe,” Mr. Fremund’s voice sounded tight, like he wanted to scold us badly but decided to control himself. He was lounged on one of the long couches, still clad in his work clothes despite having gotten home more than twenty minutes ago.
We had to be the most ungrateful set of individuals for not allowing Mr. Fremund to settle in before informing him of our decision to leave tomorrow. But what could we do? We couldn’t just stop living because selected psychopaths decided we were playthings to them.
The lawyer stared at each and every one of us as he rebutted, “I understand that staying cooped up in here has taken its toll, mentally and socially, but we have to be objective about this. If you walk out those doors, you’ll be headed straight into the waiting hands of the Alpha sect, and this time, I might be too late.”
“You can’t be serious,” James argued, and I placed a hand on his thigh to calm
