SM’s lips curved into a carefully measured smile. “Well, if that is your wish, Cyrus, then I shall see to it that Cassandra receives your protection.” She spoke with an almost playful slyness—after all, Cyrus had not needed to press her. Cassandra had long been one of her dearest friends, and SM would have guarded her anyway. Yet, there was undeniable comfort in having two voices from Altus’s court advocating on Cassandra’s behalf rather than only one—Thaddeus, the king’s younger brother, affectionately nicknamed Nina.
Cyrus inclined his head in gratitude. “Thank you, Your Majesty,” he said softly, his tone warm with appreciation.
“Think nothing of it,” SM replied breezily. “It gladdens me to help.”
With one final nod, Cyrus bowed and withdrew, making his way toward the carriage that would take him to the hospital where his sister lay recovering. He bowed to the queen once more, murmured a farewell, and departed, his heart lighter for the promise of added security
