“Sir, I wanted to express…”
“…that you weren’t aware Julius Du Bois is my father…” he cuts me short, replying with what he thinks I wanted to say. “We’re way past that.”
“No, sir.” I shake my head, dispelling the statement. He’s right. We’re past my shock of discovering that I’m not working for the original DuBois. “I meant to say while it’s true that we can help ourselves by not bothering each other, I think there are other ways we can be of help to each other as well.” I carefully word my statement. I’m nervous on my first day with a handsome boss, but I’m confident because of my practice and determination.
“Victors.” He points a pen at me.
“Huh?”
“Call me Victors. Drop the ‘sir.’”
“Victors,” I repeat after him in the straightest face I can muster. There’s no way of saying his name that won’t have it come out like I want a piece of him.
