Chapter 20
After making sure the locks were secured, she crept on silent feet through each room, clearing the foyer, bedroom, workshop, kitchen, and living room. She went so far as to check below the bed, behind the shower curtain, and in every closet, making sure no spot was left untouched before allowing herself to relax.
There was no such thing as being too careful in her life. The control she held over her power was still a work in progress at best, and though she was growing more accustomed to using it, she couldn’t—wouldn’t—let go of old habits so easily.
Lowering her gun, she holstered it and silently crossed to the monitors of her security system. She sat on the hard wooden stool and searched through the footage once. Then twice.
What the fuck? That’s… not possible.
The security cameras hadn’t picked up anyone approaching her front door. One minute her door was blank. In the next frame, there was a picture taped to it. There was nothing in between.
