Chapter 48

The speedometer was pegged, no longer able to measure Leon’s speed as he pushed the car to its limits, racing down dark, winding roads. He split his attention between the path ahead and the red, blinking dot on his phone’s screen, telling him where Alpha Rhye was located.

“Go faster,” Joseph hissed from the passenger seat.

They were the only words his brother would say aside from his greeting of “If she’s dead, so are you,” when Leon had picked him up.

He didn’t respond now, because they were almost there, and he hadn’t responded then, because he knew if she were gone, he wouldn’t be able to live with himself, he wouldn’t deny Joseph’s killing blow.

The irony was almost comical, in a tragic, humorless way, that an hour ago he’d thought the worst of her, and yet, a world without Livia in it was a reality he refused to let himself entertain.
