Chapter 6

Sophie

My jaw dropped – I was taken by complete surprise. I stayed fixed on the spot, staring down at the ground. I could hear the words reverberate in my ears over and over again.

“You are all dismissed… except number ten.”

Normally, I would have flaunted being chosen out of everyone here, but today something gave me an odd sense of déjà vu.

“I’ll have to excuse you both, sir,” the woman in charge said, raising her head and giving me a sharp murderous glance before turning to walk away from us.

I raised my head slightly to meet the man sitting before me, everything about him commanding absolute respect, but I knew nothing good would come from this.

“And what’s your name?” he asked me with his voice, sounding as harsh and cold as ice.

“Sophie,” I responded to him, my voice betraying me, as it sounded more like a squeak rather than me talking.

He raised his left brow, cocking it to a side as if he had not heard what I said properly.
