I opened the door to Mom’s bedroom and walked in. She was on the bed, her skin pale and white.

“You said she was stable and getting better...” I turned to Aldrich. That’s what he told me.

I reached out to Mom on the bed. There was juice on the table beside her. I picked it up, examined it, and inhaled.

I could smell the poison in it, and it was more concentrated than before.
