He didn’t come over.
I could feel his eyes on me through the windshield and intensely like a wolf’s stare during a hunt but Alpha Sherman stayed where he was.
After what seemed like forever, he finally turned away.
He gave our car one last look before climbing into his fancy black SUV.
The door closed with a soft thump that somehow felt final.
I didn’t realize I’d been holding my breath until his convoy started moving, tires making that crunchy sound on the pavement.
But even after he left, the knot in my chest remained tight as ever.
