Christine, Marie, and I served dishes in the cafeteria early in the morning. Many of the maids who came by to get their meals asked the same question that even I didn’t know the answer to: Where was Clarabelle? It had already been a few days since she stabbed me, and she still hadn’t come out of hiding. If only I knew where she went...

“It’s just not the same without Clarabelle around; don’t you think we should try to look for her?” I asked whichever of the two girls cared to listen. Christine picked up a tray of parboiled rice and walked over to the counter, replying,
"Look, I understand that you’re worried about Clarabelle, and yes, we should be making attempts to look for her, but we were just servants. How in the world are we going to find her? We don’t even know where she went.”
