Chapter 298

All around the two of them swirled experienced, fast-moving, and efficient medical people. Mia's doctor, a pretty young thing with a warm smile, encouraged her to push.

Mia scrunched up her face both in effort and grimace of discomfort. Her body heaved to give their baby his way into the world. Beside her stood Jacob, setting the tempo through each contraction in a voice steady through the gale.

Seconds ticked over. Mia screamed loud and hard, shaking under exhaustion. Jacob held her in his arms with tears of joy mingling with hers.

And the baby was born tiny, alive. Jacob, amazed, looked at it as Mia lay back, out of energy.

"It's a boy!" the doctor exclaimed triumphantly as she put the baby in Mia's arms.

In that moment, their eyes met his face glowing and Mia whispered back in response to Jacob, "We did it," barely audible.

That positivity poured off of Jacob's face in love. "We sure did," he said, the emotion edging out in ripples in his voice.
