Chapter 39
When Doctor Richard had come with those options, he had tugged at the cross in his pockets, having conflicting emotions over what was right and what he needed to do. The burden of being the sacrificial lamb for so long had weighed on him in that moment and he thought, he could not sacrifice his conscience too. What would that make of him? An empty shell of a man.
God would surely keep his mother. So, he had declined. When he found his mother's cold body on her bed, her eyes peacefully shut as though she was in a dreamless sleep, a thousand knives of guilt pricked at his chest. What was his conscience in the face of this much guilt? Lewis drives the car to a stop right in front of a Gucci store and parks the car. Lewis notices there are unshed tears in Sam's eyes.
