“We can’t leave it out here for too long, or other predators will find it,” Matthew said. “We might lose some of it, or you could wait here and defend your kill while I get the ATV. What do you want to do?”

I sat down.

“Good wolf. I should be back in thirty minutes or so. Wait here.”

Matthew shifted to his wolf and headed off at a high rate of speed. I waited. Around twenty minutes or so later, another small pack of wolves, real ones, I could tell, found the dead deer and me.

I was about twenty percent larger than the largest wolf in the pack, but I was outnumbered around ten to one by adult wolves. This was not good. I growled and stood my ground. I sent a long howl out, hoping Matthew was close enough to hear. I heard three howls come back. Were they more real wolves, or some werewolves? I didn’t think Matthew could howl back. He was in his human form on an ATV.
