Seeing Edmund’s teary eyes, Rachel felt a strange emotion rise in her chest. Assuming it was only sympathy, she said,
“Sorry, Mr. Hills. I didn’t mean to bring up old wounds. I’m just trying to understand your situation.”
“No, please don’t apologize. It’s not your fault. You’re innocent. I’m the one who should apologize. I dragged you into my problems. You must think I’m a strange and rude man. Sorry if I acted like a jerk.”
Rachel snorted lightly.
“I don’t know if I should say this, but I’m relieved you’re aware of it. I hope you don’t do it again. You can treat Sky like your daughter, but please remember—I’m not your wife. I hope you understand.”
