Chapter 53. I Love You, Uncle Ed
Edmund closed the book and gently placed Sky into her sleeping bag. While the child slept, he lay on his side, supporting his head with one hand.
“Thank you for growing into a kind and smart child, Sky. I’m very proud of you,” he whispered, stroking her hand gently.
His smile was faint, his breathing heavy. He never once looked away from that little face.
“I’m sorry that we have to part. I’m sorry I didn’t have more time with you. If I had a chance to make up for it, I would definitely be the best father to you.”
He kissed Sky’s hand and pressed it against his cheek, hoping it would ease the weight in his chest. But the pressure only grew stronger.
“If only I hadn’t pushed you away...”
A single tear slipped down his face. Afraid of wetting Sky’s hand, he quickly wiped
