Chapter 58
Zayate’s POV
[The next day]
Uncle Saliou called to tell me that his sister had agreed to see us, even though it wasn’t easy. She didn’t want to see me after what I’d done. As if I wanted to see her face—I was doing all this for Ousmane. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have bothered.
Today, I managed to wash and change, and I was able to swallow some plain rice porridge without sugar. That was all I could handle; anything else made me nauseous. I took the car key and went to find Camara, who drove me to the uncle’s house. I picked him up, and we set off for my mother-in-law’s place.
When we arrived, a girl seated us in the living room. After about five minutes, my mother-in-law entered the room. Seeing her stern face made my courage start to slip away.
“Hello, Mama Ramata.”
“Hello,” she answered curtly.
