Elizabeth’s POV
“No, no. I went to dinner with you last night,” I said firmly, though there was a teasing lilt to my voice that betrayed how comfortable I’d grown around him. “I’m not going to a party with you.”
I turned my attention back to Dumber, who was circling my feet impatiently, tail flicking as if she were offended by the delay. I scooped up her bowl and poured in her food, watching as she immediately abandoned dignity and dove in face-first. Chuck followed me into the kitchen, leaning casually against the counter like he owned the place—or at least felt at home enough to pretend he did.
“Please,” he pleaded, drawing the word out in a way that would’ve been obnoxious if it were anyone else. “Come with me. I don’t have a date, and I’ll be bored.”
