Chapter 1. Rejected
Becca's POV
"No! You can't do this to me!"
As Elyon’s words echoed in my mind, disbelief twisted into agony. A sharp ringing filled my ears, drowning out everything else. It felt too surreal. We had made promises—promises about when this would happen. And now Elyon was backing out.
I thought about all the times he had sworn his love for me, the countless moments we shared. Were they ever real? Or had I simply been a temporary distraction, filling the void until his fated mate arrived to claim him completely?
"I'm truly sorry, Becca," Elyon said, his voice tinged with regret. "But I can't resist Xena. The mate pull... it's overwhelming. It clouds my mind, draws me to her in ways I can't fight. I’d rather be honest with you now than live a double life behind your back."
He reached out, trying to hold me, but I recoiled as if his touch burned. The last thing I wanted was comfort from the very person who had shattered me.
"Elyon," I choked out, my voice trembling as tears blurred my vision. "What am I supposed to do now? Tell me!"
I was lost, desperate for answers from the man I thought would always be my anchor. I tried to stay strong, to keep my pain from spilling over, but it was no use. The ache in my chest was unbearable, each breath a struggle against the overwhelming despair.
"For years, you've called me your Luna," I continued, my voice growing steadier despite the tears. "I've stood by your side, supported you, fulfilled every duty expected of me. The entire pack knows me as your future Luna. And now you're casting me aside? What am I supposed to do, Elyon?"
He had to fix this. He was the one who had broken our vows.
Elyon met my gaze, and I saw the turmoil in his eyes. But it wasn’t enough.
"We swore to reject our mates when they arrived!" I reminded him bitterly. "You promised, Elyon. You'll have to reject Xena. You owe me that much."
We stood on the wooden platform by the pack’s lake, a place so breathtaking and serene it once felt sacred. This was where we had made love for the first time, where we had whispered our dreams for the future. Now, it was where he was breaking my heart.
Elyon exhaled shakily, his face filled with torment.
"I'm sorry, Becca. But I can't reject her. Even if I wanted to, it’s too late. My parents have already arranged for us to be announced at tonight's pack gathering. Xena's family is on their way. Our union has been confirmed, and tonight, we will mark each other... before the entire pack."
Fear and jealousy crashed over me in waves.
We had agreed to mark each other only after his Alpha ceremony, later this year. I had trusted him, supported him in every decision. And now, he was giving everything I had dreamed of—everything he had promised—to someone else. Before he even took his position as Alpha.
Had his parents always doubted me? Was their kindness nothing more than a facade? My breath hitched as realization struck, and tears spilled freely. The idea of him marking another she-wolf was like a dagger piercing my chest.
This was the end.
Not just of us, but of everything I had worked for—becoming Luna, earning the respect of the pack. Now, I was nothing. Staying here, watching Elyon parade around with his mate, would destroy me. And the other female wolves? They would relish my humiliation, either mocking me outright or offering fake sympathy.
For a moment, I wondered if Elyon had even considered what would happen to me—what my place in the pack would be after this public betrayal. Was the mate bond so powerful it stripped away all empathy?
"But we can still be together, Becca," he whispered, and the sheer audacity of his words stunned me. "I can't give you the Luna position anymore, but that doesn't mean we have to end things. We shared something special. My feelings for you haven't just disappeared. Please... we don't have to let this be the end."
I stared at him, disbelief boiling into fury. Did he truly expect me to settle for being his side affair while he bonded with another?
Without thinking, my hand lashed out, the sharp crack of the slap echoing across the lake. His cheek bloomed red, and for a heartbeat, shock flickered in his eyes—quickly replaced by rage.
"Remember who I am, Becca," he growled, voice low and dangerous. "I'm still your Alpha. After tonight, when Xena and I are bound, we will speak again. And I want to see if you still dare defy me then. You’ve always been so... obedient. So submissive in my hands."
I backed away, heart pounding, the sting of his words cutting deeper than any physical blow. My legs felt unsteady as I turned and fled.
By the time I reached home, my mother was waiting, worry etched deep into her features. She opened her arms, and I collapsed into them, sobbing.
"Becca, I’m so sorry," she whispered, holding me tight. My relationship with Elyon had always been a source of tension in our family. My parents had tolerated it, but never truly approved—especially my mother, who constantly warned me about the strength of mate bonds.
"Try to move on," she whispered gently. "I know it feels impossible, but one day, you'll find your true mate. And he will be worth all of this pain."
But I doubted her words could ever come true.
For years, Elyon and I had built a life together, a future I could no longer see. I felt unmoored, as if everything that had once grounded me had been ripped away. He had prepared me to become Luna—now, I was nothing more than a discarded pack wolf with no future.
In my room, the pain only intensified. The walls were filled with photos of Elyon and me, captured in happier times. Rage surged through me, and I tore them down, shredding the images into tiny pieces.
"Liar! Cheater!" I screamed, my voice cracking as the last remnants of our love lay in ruins around me.
