[Flashback]

I was lying on my bed, lazily scrolling through my phone while some random show played on the TV in the background. The house was quiet for once.

Then the doorbell rang.

I groaned and dragged myself up. When I opened the door, it was the delivery guy holding a big pizza box.

“Pizza for Helene Lennox,” he announced.

Helene was out of sight to retrieve her order, so I signed for it quickly, took the box, and shut the door with my foot. The smell of cheese and pepperoni hit me as I walked down the hallway toward Helene’s room.

That’s when I heard the whispers.

I paused right outside her door, pizza box still in my hands. Instead of knocking, I leaned in and pressed my ear against the wood, listening carefully.

Helene’s voice came through first, shaky and nervous.
