Chapter 46
After we finished dinner in the workshop, we returned home, and both of us were distracted by washing and preparing for sleep. Then I sat on the bed and looked at Manar and Iman as they whispered something that they did not want me to hear. In order not to disturb them, I pretended to lie down to sleep and turned my back to them, but I felt someone sitting behind me, and then I heard Manar say:
“I’ll go get it from the kitchen.”
She turned around and Iman was sitting next to my head and smiling. Then she came closer and kissed my head and whispered, “Come on, get up, the night’s not over yet.”
I sat and whispered like her, “What’s going on? Why are we whispering?”
Manar entered the room door and was carrying a small cake with the number sixteen wax on it and said, “Your birthday passed during our high school days, and we were not able to celebrate it due to the many misfortunes we experienced. That is why Iman and I decided to celebrate it today.”
