Chapter 78. A Dead Man

“When will she wake up?”
This had to be the hundredth time Jackson had fired the same question at me and the poor doctor in the last thirty minutes.
In truth, I was no better.
“You were supposed to keep her safe, Scott.”
His anger was evident in his voice.
“Don’t try and blame him, Jack. He did his best. If she didn’t have security…” She choked on her words, holding back her tears. “We failed her, Jackson. She was trying to tell me.”
Jack’s expression softened. He soothed her with his hand on her shoulder. The affection between the siblings reminded me of the family I did not have, the sister I lost. Would she have stood by me or would she have taken the side of the sister that survived?
“I’m sorry, Jack… I—”
“No, no, I’m sorry. I apologize for trying to push the blame on you.”
