Chapter 85. What Are You Hiding?

For the first time in forever, I understood the fear of one’s mother. Her eyes weren’t calm as usual or filled with arrogance. There was something more…I had never seen her eyes like that—not that I had seen much of them.
Realizing we would need her to be on our side, at least keep shut about what she’d seen until we were ready for the world to know.
“Tell me, Eliana. Tell me you weren’t foolish enough to get married in secret. Behind your father’s back!”
What else were we supposed to do? She herself said he was no saint. If she was so worried about his reaction, shouldn’t I do the same?
“It is not foolishness, mother. It is love!” How could she not understand that?
For a second, I feared she was going to strangle me. I took a few steps backwards like a coward. Every time I think of being hit, I’m taken back to that day in the hall. The sounds of her hands striking Scott’s face did not help. I was lost in some sort of trance.
