It was as the first grey light of dawn streaked the sky outside his window of the house in the town, that Piers came awake. The soft sound of clothes, the rustle of her movements as she crept around, preparing to leave, that must have been what had brought him awake, he realized as he rubbed a hand roughly over his stubbled jaw and opened his eyes,

In the gloom, he saw her.

Hila Zaidi was moving to the door. As though becoming aware of his gaze on her, she turned. As always, hiding her body under layers of coats, for Hila had once mentioned, in a rare glimpse of her true nature, that the cold affected her badly.

The dark, watchful gaze settled on him and she hesitated for a moment before coming to him, moving swiftly. With a groan, he raised his arms and gripped her nape, kissing her as though the world was coming to an end as he kissed her hard.
