“Do you think the Alphas know about our plan to get rid of the Breeder?” King Gene asks as he paces up and down behind his huge executive desk. I feel like I have to strain my neck to see him properly as the height of the desk dwarfs his small stature even more.

“No,” I lie. My heart is racing, but I take the calming breaths that Shelby taught me whenever she insists I join her in her yoga routines.

“They were here and asked me what would happen to her after she gave birth. I could have sworn they knew something,” he says.

I inhale and count slowly to five. I exhale sharply and then answer, “They have no idea. I’m sure they’re just concerned about her safety as a result of Alpha Kane’s threats and also because of the unfortunate death of the chef. All these events are enough to rattle anyone. I’m sure they have no clue about your plans to get rid of the Breeder.”

It hurts me to refer to Rose as ‘the Breeder.’ It sounds so animalist
