Chapter 96. I Promise You

“Hey, Claire?” Ethan suddenly asked, interrupting my thoughts. I hummed in response, peering up at him as he continued, “If you get scared, please tell me. I don’t want you to get hurt or afraid. Okay? Promise?” He asked. I frowned at the look in his eye. He sounded serious when he said that, as if he truly meant it.

But still, I couldn’t help but feel like he was expecting something bad to happen. I hesitated for a moment as I contemplated whether to tell him the truth.

“Ethan, it’s okay for me to get scared occasionally. It’s not a big deal. I’ll be fine.” I answered confidently. 

He sighed deeply before shaking his head, “No Claire, it’s not okay. Don’t be stupid. I know you. You’re too stubborn to admit to anything that scares you, especially when you’re not supposed to. Now promise me you will tell me when you’re scared.” He pleaded.

“Okay, I promise.” I replied quietly, hoping that would be enough to satisfy him.
